- The measurement of dust plumes within the atmosphere typically relies on a small number of fixed-point monitors at, or close to, ground level. Dust plumes, moving under prevailing meteorological conditions, may be missed by these monitors and thus avoid detection. A fast-scanning LiDAR system is being developed within an industry funded PhD project to scan for dust emissions over a large atmospheric volume with high spatial resolution. The system incorporates a short, <1nS, pulsed 355 nm UV laser source and a 355 mm diameter telescope with a photomultiplier tube to visualise dust plumes in three-dimensions with a range resolution of 1.5 m and an acquisition time of less than 5 seconds per single direction line scan. The design avoids the shortcomings of current commercial LiDAR systems that have 10-30s single direction acquisition times, slow mechanical movement of the telescope and 25-40 m range resolution. The system has been field tested to a range of 2.2 km at an open-cut mine in the Upper Hunter, NSW detecting dust plumes emerging from specific mining activities via a normalised relative backscatter signal. The detected dust plumes will later be correlated to subsequent measurements following the implementation of specific dust mitigation measures and fixed-point monitors on site.
